Game of Thrones Season 4: Fight to the Social Media Death

The countdown has finally come to an end! That’s right, on Sunday evening the long-awaited fourth season of TV’s most talked-about series of all-time, Game of Thrones – Season 4, took to our screens! For the past week, our social media monitoring software, Digimind Social, has been tuning-in 24/7 to what social is saying about the well-loved warriors of Westeros to provide you with up-to-the-minute analytics of what and who is trending in the Seven Kingdoms.

In this exclusive Digimind blog, we shed some light on which House  is – for the moment – holding on to the social media Iron Throne and which of the GOT giants is taking the social media world by storm…and much, much more!

The Highest Hitting Game of Thrones Searches

First of all, Digimind Social’s ‘Top Search’ tool has been monitoring what GOT gurus across the globe have been searching for online in the run up to the release of season 4.

According to our analytics, it seems 9 months proved a little too much for some GOT geeks to handle, with the second top searched phrase being “game of thrones characters”. Don’t tell me you forgot whether the witty, little one was Tyrion or Tywin…?!

    Tracking Trends 24/7

Now, let’s take a peak (excuse the pun) at how #GoTSeason4 – the official hashtag of the saga – was harnessed on social media on April 6th. And get this…it’s calculated on an hour-by-hour basis, so you never miss a thing!

As you might expect, social media stats soared on the 6th of April: the day of the launch of the new season. Luckily for you, Digimind Social doesn’t stop there: by clicking on any of the reference points, you can zoom-in on the tweets, comments and articles making headlines that day – pretty cool, huh?

Which Families are Fuelling Social Media Furor?!

If you’re a Game of Thrones groupie, like me, you’re probably dying to hear which family is stealing the social media show, following Sunday’s season premiere.  As always, the battle was brutal…some would say, it was a followers fight to the death (although death is probably the last thing you want to think about after the Red Wedding!)

But, I digress…back to the familial feud fuelling social media furor! Unsurprisingly, clinching majority mentions at 2477 (27%) were House Stark of Winterfell. The Starks’ sent social media stats soaring in the first week of April (1st – 7th), with an irrepressible reach of 367 million (that’s 17% of the total potential audience for GOT!) Not far behind, lagged House Lannister of Casterly Rock with an equally impressive mountain of mentions, standing at 2090 (23%).

Falling just short (Tyrion in particular!) of their mortal enemies, the Starks, House Lannister racked up an equally impressive potential audience of 313 million – wow, that’s close! Taking the next top spots are the Targaryen clan (House Targaryen) with 1570 mentions, followed far behind by – much to the dismay of juvenile King Joffrey – House Baratheon, with a measly 7% of mentions.

However, “Winter is Coming” and the tides are ever-changing in Westeros… According to our social media analytics, the Baratheons, as ever, are the dark horses of this social media grudge-match, with a reigning influence rank of 5. This means the Baratheons are, in-fact, the most talked-about House in the high-ranking realms of the social media world. So, watch out Starks, the Baratheons are about!

The Ultimate Family Feud: Starks vs Lannisters

Here at Digimind, we wanted to know how fans are feeling about the ultimate family feud, that is House Stark vs House Lannister.

So, we asked our social media listening tool, Digimind Social, to take to Twitter and tell us how fans really felt about these feuding families…let’s take a look:

Although the sentiments paint the Lannister’s in a largely likable light…we trawled twitter and found that this may be down to a certain Lannister’s looks:

As for the Starks, it seems social is hatin’ on Cate (Catelyn Stark, that is!)…

Whilst, it seems her daughter, intrepid Arya Stark, is winning the hearts of the social media masses – I wonder why this could be…

    Ones to Watch in Westeros

Last up, we’re talking ones to watch: which of your favourite fictional figures is making waves in Westeros?

Digimind’s social media listening tool has been keeping its ears perked for Game of Thrones gossip across the globe and has come up with a list of the most talked-about GOT characters on social media, in the week leading up to Season 4.

    1. Khaleesi

khaleesi social mediaKhaleesi, otherwise known as Daenerys Targaryen, takes the top spot when it comes to social media mentions in the past week – totalling 24% of online mentions. Although, it’s really no wonder this “Breaker of Chains” has brought about such a buzz: the concluding clip of Khaleesi, freeing the slave people of Yankai in Season 3 likely labelled her as a favourite, plus she’s a pretty empowering female figure (albeit fictional) …not to mention, she has real, fire-breathing dragons… Now, if that’s not a cause for social media mayhem, I’m not sure what is!

    2. Joffrey

    Joffrey_social_media

In second place, is the character we love to hate and hate to love: Joffrey Baratheon. Despite his age, this conniving little King has captured the interests of internauts across the world wide web with 17% of mentions. Is it that his sociopathic style of rule has us hooked?

    3. Tyrion

Hot on Joffrey’s heels is Tyrion Lannister, the petite powerhouse whose witty ways and impressive intellect know no bounds! With 15% of mentions, it seems size really doesn’t matter when it comes to proving your popularity…

There you have it, a whistle-stop Game of Thrones guide of what’s hot (Jaimie Lannister, apparently) and what’s not (Joffrey?!) in the social media sphere this week!

As for who’s taken the social media Iron Throne, we can’t quite work it out yet…but maybe at the end of Season 4, we’ll have a better idea!
